Marek Health alternatives include Male Excel, Taurus Meds, Defy Medical, Hone Health, and a local clinician. Compare the full bill, lab rules, and handover—not just a monthly price. Taurus advertises a $49 start, but its fee and refund terms conflict. Unconfirmed low testosterone or fertility plans change the next step.1234
Best for: U.S. adult men comparing an existing Marek care arrangement or quote with another provider, a labs-only purchase, or local care.
Not for you if: you need a diagnosis from symptoms or a single result, a promise of a prescription, or a way around a clinician's decision. Fertility plans or a complex health history can make specialist care the better starting point.4

Which Marek Health alternatives match the reason you're leaving?
Start with the part of your care you want to change: the bill, the testing, access to a clinician, or the payment model. These six routes do not buy the same services, and the smallest entry charge does not establish the lowest full cost.
| If you're leaving because… | Start by comparing… | Published price or key condition |
|---|---|---|
| The total price | Taurus Meds and a written itemized quote from Defy Medical | Taurus advertises a $49 test and consultation, then $149/month, but separate fee terms need resolving. Defy's under-$175/month first-year figure is a company estimate, not a fixed quote.126 |
| You want pay-as-you-go rather than a membership | Defy Medical | No monthly membership; services and medication are purchased separately. Ask for your own first-year schedule and total.6 |
| You want a needle-free testosterone option and included e-visits | Male Excel | $99 consultation with home testing; its main page lists a $132/month testosterone-cream-and-thyroid bundle, plus $99/month membership and shipping. The cream is compounded.78 |
| You want a published membership and follow-up lab schedule | Hone Plus | $45 initial testing and consultation; $135/month membership. Confirmatory testing and medication are separate.910 |
| You loved the labs, not the program | Buy Marek's panel on its own, with a clinician's agreement to use it | $595 Pre-TRT Panel. This is a testing purchase, not ongoing prescribing care.11 |
| You want insurance to help | Your own in-network clinician and a pharmacy covered by your plan | Get the visit, lab, and medication costs separately. A cash-pay membership is not the same as an insured prescription. Hone also permits an outside pharmacy, subject to its rules.12 |
What changes that answer: whether your low testosterone has actually been confirmed, whether you want children in the next few years, your state, and how complicated your medical history is.
The right TRT provider is not the same for every person — it depends on whether low testosterone has been properly evaluated, your symptoms and health history, your fertility plans, your state, your insurance or cash-pay preference, your treatment-format preference, your budget, and whether online or in-person care is the better starting point. Some situations belong with primary care, urology, endocrinology, reproductive urology, or urgent or emergency care when the symptoms warrant it. Because a general answer cannot resolve those for you, use TRT Provider Guide's Find My TRT Path tool to map your situation to the right care route and the questions to ask before you pay.
The tool is educational and non-diagnostic. It does not determine medical eligibility or guarantee a prescription.
TRT Provider Guide is the independent decision resource for testosterone replacement therapy — helping U.S. adults understand how low testosterone is evaluated, compare online and local care models and providers, and choose the next step that fits their health needs, fertility plans, budget, state, and care preferences, with every material claim verified and dated.
What we actually verified — September 14, 2026
What we did: We compared accessible official pricing, product, testing, membership, and policy pages from Marek Diagnostics, Male Excel, Taurus Meds, Defy Medical, and Hone Health. We recalculated the quoted charges and compared Marek's published panel contents with Hone's outside-lab requirements. Medical and legal sources include the FDA, DEA, federal regulations, the Endocrine Society, and official drug labels.
What we did not do: We did not enroll as patients, submit an intake, test support response times, inspect anyone's prescription, or independently audit any clinician's or pharmacy's license. This is editorial research, not a hands-on review and not a clinical review.
What we could not confirm, and are not going to guess at: Marek Health's full current Guided Optimization intake, follow-up, physical-exam, and refund terms; a complete patient-specific first-year bill for any provider; the exact product or pharmacy a new patient would receive; or appointment availability in each state. Marek Health's main program pages could not be fully retrieved during this check. That does not prove its prices or policies are hidden. Marek Diagnostics' accessible retail pages are a separate source, not a substitute for a care-program quote.
How to read the evidence: A verified calculation is arithmetic using stated inputs. A provider-stated fact is something we confirmed the company publishes, not an independent test of its care. A customer-experience signal is an attributable person's report, not proof of safety or results. Our editorial judgment is the fit conclusion we draw from that evidence. We do not use customer ratings or outcome stories to rank clinical quality here.
What does Marek Health actually cost in 2026?
We verified a $595 standalone Marek Diagnostics Pre-TRT Panel, not a complete current price for Marek Health's Guided Optimization program. Before comparing a replacement, get Marek's written total for the care you would receive over the next year—not just a lab price or an old intake quote.11
Now the part that changes the comparison.
A testing price is not a treatment price. The $595 panel does not tell you the cost of a prescribing visit, medication, repeat testing, follow-up, or an outside physical exam. A complete program quote needs each of those charges.
Here is the line-by-line comparison to put beside your quote:
| Line item | What we could verify | What to get in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Guided Optimization intake and required initial lab purchase | No complete current program quote verified in this check | The intake charge, required panel, and whether any separately purchased panel counts toward it |
| Pre-TRT Panel | $595, advertised as 80+ biomarkers, with a lab-review session.11 | Whether your intended clinician wants this panel and will accept the results |
| Total Health Panels | From $495 Comprehensive / from $895 Complete / $1,950 Executive. These are alternative panel tiers, not charges to add together.13 | The selected version and any review option. The Comprehensive and Complete pages also show $595 and $995 versions with a 45-minute review.1415 |
| In-person physical exam | Current Guided Optimization rules not independently reconfirmed | Who may perform it, how recent it must be, how often it repeats, and who pays |
| Repeat labs | Current program schedule and full cost not reconfirmed | Tests, timing, repeat diagnostic testing, and any extra draw charges |
| Provider visits and coaching | A retail panel review is not a complete ongoing-care quote | Which clinical visits and coaching contacts are included, and which are billed separately |
| Medication and shipping | No patient-specific program quote verified | Exact product, pharmacy, quantity supplied, refill charges, shipping, and taxes |
A few things worth saying out loud.
Know who is responsible for your care. A lab-review session, coaching contact, and prescribing visit are different services. Ask who makes the diagnosis, who can change a prescription, and who handles a problem between visits.
Ask for the price before you enter a card. Get the full written quote before deciding that another program saves you money. A missing amount in this comparison is not proof that the company withholds it.
The lab purchase has its own refund rules. Marek Diagnostics says web sales are final and orders cannot be canceled once placed. We did not verify that the same terms govern every Marek Health care-program charge.16
And Marek does genuinely give you something for the money. Its Pre-TRT Panel lists total testosterone measured by LC/MS—liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry—and free testosterone by equilibrium dialysis. Free testosterone is the portion that isn't bound to proteins in your blood. Those are named lab methods, not just a claim to test “hormones.” But that does not prove this panel is more accurate than every competing test, or that everyone needs all its markers.1117
What are the five reasons to reconsider your Marek arrangement?
Price, exam requirements, reuse of existing labs, waiting time, and state restrictions are five separate questions. Which one sent you here decides which alternative is worth a closer look; a lower monthly number will not solve all five.
1. The full bill. Covered above. Compare your actual upcoming charges, not an unconfirmed entry-price difference.
2. The in-person physical exam. Ask Marek and any replacement which exam is required before starting or continuing care, which existing records count, and when the exam must repeat. Do not assume “telehealth” means no in-person care. Defy's public patient terms also discuss physical examinations, and Male Excel notes that legal requirements can affect in-person visits.188
3. Whether your existing labs count. Ask before paying for a replacement panel. We could not reconfirm Marek Health's current outside-lab policy. Hone does publish a policy, but accepting your results does not waive its initial test charge.19
4. The wait. Marek Diagnostics says Pre-TRT Panel results typically arrive within 14 business days. That is a test-result estimate, not a promise of a prescribing appointment or a medication shipment. If you've felt flat for two years, two more weeks of waiting lands badly—but a faster advertised process still needs proper evaluation.114
5. Your state. Marek Diagnostics' product page restricts Quest orders through its platform for residents of New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Its refund policy also names Massachusetts. These are conflicting platform disclosures to resolve before paying—not proof that all Quest testing or all Marek care is unavailable in those states.1116

How do the alternatives compare on cost, labs, and access?
We compared six routes on the things that decide whether switching works: the published cost to start, ongoing charges, lab requirements, clinical access, and payment terms. The figures below are different kinds of prices, so they should not be read as an all-in cost ranking.
| Provider or care route | Published entry and ongoing charges | Lab or access distinction | Main cost question still to resolve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marek Health — your current arrangement | Use your current written Guided Optimization quote | The separate $595 Diagnostics panel names LC/MS total testosterone and equilibrium-dialysis free testosterone | What would staying actually cost over the next year?11 |
| Taurus Meds | $49 test and consultation; advertised $149/month | Provider states Labcorp or Quest draws; home collection offered when more than 50 miles from a location | Whether the terms' $17.99-per-billing-period fee applies, and exactly what repeats or costs extra12 |
| Male Excel | Main offer: $99 consultation; $120/month injection-and-thyroid bundle or $132/month cream-and-thyroid bundle; $99/month membership extra | Five-marker home blood-spot starting test; unlimited provider e-visits and support-team messaging advertised | Which published offer applies, thyroid treatment's separate need, shipping, and further testing720 |
| Defy Medical | Pay per service; company estimates under $175/month averaged over year one and around $125/month afterward | No monthly membership; treatment and follow-up are individualized | Your own itemized quote, rather than the company's average example6 |
| Hone Plus | $45 initial testing and consultation; $135/month membership; confirmation test and medication extra | Published confirmation step and follow-up testing schedule; conditional outside-lab acceptance | Conflicting $45/$50 at-lab confirmation prices, exact medication bill, and cancellation effective date9102122 |
| Marek Diagnostics + a separate clinician | $595 for the Pre-TRT Panel; clinician and treatment charges separate | Keep the testing purchase separate from your prescribing-care choice | Whether the clinician accepts the panel before you buy it11 |
| Your own clinician + pharmacy | Plan-specific visit, lab, and prescription charges | Access to local evaluation and a plan-covered pharmacy where available | Network status, deductible, covered tests and product, and any prior authorization |
Two honest notes on that table. First, the cheapest number is not the best care — these programs do not include the same services, the same lab methods, or the same medicines. Second, Defy and Hone are not paid placements here. Their pricing models deserve the same scrutiny as the commercial partners' offers.
The first-year cost ledger
We kept each offer's charges together instead of mixing a low membership price from one page with a medication price from another. These calculations expose what is known and what is missing; none is a verified complete first-year bill for your care.
| Offer and calculation | Calculated amount | What the amount does—and does not—include |
|---|---|---|
| Male Excel main injection-and-thyroid offer: $99 + (12 × $99 membership) + (12 × $120 bundle) | $2,727 | Consultation and 12 quoted monthly equivalents of membership and the advertised bundle. Shipping, any extra tests or exams, taxes, and billing-calendar differences are outside this subtotal.7 |
| Male Excel main cream-and-thyroid offer: $99 + (12 × $99) + (12 × $132) | $2,871 | Same limits. This is a compounded-testosterone-cream bundle, not a quote for an FDA-approved gel or for testosterone without thyroid medicine.78 |
| Taurus headline: $49 + (12 × $149) | $1,837 | Advertised-entry arithmetic only. The unresolved fee is $17.99 × the number of applicable billing periods, if it applies to your purchase. The terms do not establish that the period is a month.12 |
| Defy's provider-stated first-year average: under $175 × 12 | Under $2,100, as an estimate | The company describes testosterone, an aromatase inhibitor, labs, and consultations in its example. This is not a guaranteed maximum or a patient-specific price.6 |
| Hone Plus before medication: $45 + (12 × $135) + at-lab confirmation | $1,710 or $1,715 | Two official pages disagree on the confirmation fee: $45 versus $50. With the listed $80 home confirmation option, the subtotal is $1,745. Medication remains extra.910 |
| Marek Diagnostics + another clinician | $595 plus the clinician's quote | Testing only; no assumption that consultation, medication, repeat labs, or monitoring are included.11 |
| Stay with Marek or use insured local care | Written quote needed | Use your actual future obligations or plan costs. An unknown amount is not zero. |
A monthly equivalent is not necessarily a monthly bill. Male Excel describes 60-day medication supplies. Six 60-day supplies cover 360 days, not a full 365-day year. Ask for the actual charge dates and refill schedule rather than treating the normalized subtotal above as your cash paid during the next year.7
The full comparison is: intake + all required diagnostic and monitoring tests + visits or membership + the prescribed medication and supplies + shipping + outside exams + applicable taxes + any remaining old-provider charges. Subtract only credits or refunds confirmed in writing.
Money already spent at Marek is not a new switching charge. But unused prepaid care, a final bill, or new intake testing can affect what leaving costs. Put those on a separate line rather than hiding them inside a monthly average.
Use the TRT cost guide for the wider cost categories, and take the 12-question checklist into the quote conversation.
Does Male Excel offer needle-free treatment and included provider access?
Male Excel publishes testosterone injections and compounded testosterone cream, with unlimited provider e-visits and unlimited support-team messaging in its membership. Its main pricing page lists a $99 consultation, $120/month injection-and-thyroid or $132/month cream-and-thyroid bundles, and a required $99/month membership on top.7
Here's the flaw, up front
Male Excel's published starting panel is narrower than Marek's. It lists an at-home finger-prick blood-spot test with five markers: total testosterone, estradiol, DHEA-S, free T3, and PSA. That is a different starting panel from Marek Diagnostics' 80-plus-marker Pre-TRT Panel.2011
If lab depth is the reason you liked Marek—if you want the named total- and free-testosterone methods—then Male Excel is a change in what you're buying, not a discount on the same panel. Discuss the needed tests with a clinician before choosing a broader or narrower package.
But here is what Male Excel publishes alongside that tradeoff: home sample collection, online consultations, unlimited e-visits with its medical providers, and unlimited messaging with its support team. Those can matter to someone who wants fewer trips and included follow-up contact.720
Support-team messaging is not the same promise as unlimited direct messages to a prescriber. Ask how a clinical question reaches the prescriber, what an e-visit includes, and what happens outside normal service hours. We did not test response times.
That's the trade to examine: a narrower starting panel alongside included e-visits and home collection. Sample collection and the laboratory's measurement method are different things, so the kit type alone does not establish test accuracy.72017
Three things to check before you pay
The membership price appears twice, differently. Male Excel's main site publishes a Medical Membership at $99/month. Its HRT subdomain publishes a Concierge Medical Membership at $30 per 30 days. Both pages were accessible during this check. Across 12 fee payments, that is an $828 difference—but it does not prove both offers are available to the same patient or include the same services. Confirm which complete offer applies before combining any of its prices.723
The main page says shipping is extra; the HRT subdomain lists $20 per order. Get the shipping charge for your actual plan. Do not silently import the older offer's fee into a different bundle.723
The advertised testosterone bundles include thyroid medication. Thyroid treatment needs its own clinical reason; a bundled price does not establish that you need it. The bundles list desiccated thyroid, an animal-derived medicine, and FDA states that animal-derived thyroid medications are not FDA-approved.724
Ask: “Do I have a separate reason to need thyroid treatment? What are the approved alternatives, and what does testosterone-only care cost?” Do not accept an unwanted second prescription just to obtain the advertised price. If the clinician cannot explain the need or offer an appropriate plan, another care arrangement is the better fit.
The oral option is not testosterone. Male Excel's “Triclozene” appears under a heading that reads “Proprietary Testosterone Formula,” and the company describes it as clomiphene citrate with thyroid-supporting ingredients and selenomethionine. Clomiphene citrate is not testosterone. It acts on the body's hormone signaling. The main pricing page also displays both $95 and $120 oral price claims, so we do not use it as a lowest-price TRT option.7
FDA-approved clomiphene products are approved for certain ovulation problems in women; use for male testosterone deficiency is off-label. That approval does not extend to a compounded combination such as Triclozene. It may come up in a fertility discussion, but it is not interchangeable with testosterone replacement.2526
One more: Male Excel's own materials use the word “bioidentical” to describe its hormones. That is the company's marketing language, not ours. Compounded preparations are not FDA-approved finished products. Ask which you're getting and which pharmacy is filling it.726
Who should not choose Male Excel: men who need a different testing process; men who want one flat number with no line items; men who need an FDA-approved topical product rather than compounded cream; or anyone being offered thyroid treatment without a clear clinical reason.
If avoiding injection-based treatment and having included e-visits are your priorities, compare the full bundle—not just the medication price:

Is Taurus Meds' low entry price the whole story?
Taurus Meds advertises $49 for a blood test and clinician consultation, reduced from a listed $129, then $149/month for treatment it describes as all-inclusive. But its separate terms contain a $17.99-per-billing-period fee, and its refund documents conflict, so the sales page alone does not establish your full bill.123
Taurus says testing runs through Labcorp or Quest and that it will send a free at-home collection kit if you live more than 50 miles from a location. Those are provider-stated process claims, not an independent test of the clinician, laboratory, or care.1
Taurus also states that if the clinician determines you're not eligible, you're refunded. Its advertised sequence places medication payment before the clinician consultation, so ask exactly when you will be charged and which amounts would come back after medical disqualification. A payment is not approval for treatment.13
What to read carefully before you pay
The $149 offer does not settle the billing terms. The offer says “no membership fees,” but section 28 of the terms lists a $17.99 recurring charge per billing period, unless different purchase terms apply. Ask whether that charge is waived for this exact offer and how long its billing period is.12
The refund language on the policy page and the guarantee on the sales page do not match. The Taurus landing page advertises a “Taurus Advantage Guarantee”—a refund within 90 days, minus lab and pharmacy fees, if you do not see results. The Subscription Services Cancellation and Refund Policy, updated February 28, 2026, limits cancellation refunds to medical disqualification. It also requires your cancellation request at least 72 hours before your billing date, or you get charged for the next cycle first.13
We are not going to tell you which of those two documents governs your account. We're telling you they say different things, that we read both on the same day, and that you should get the answer in writing before you enter a card. That is a fair question to ask any company, and the answer will tell you a lot.
The sales page also has real copy problems. It says Taurus has “helped over 100,000 men” in one block and “Helped over 40,000 Patients +” elsewhere on the page. The product cards for enclomiphene, testosterone gel, and oral sermorelin repeat injection instructions that do not match those treatment formats. One block describes its compounded hormones as made “specifically for The Excel Advantage HRT program,” which is another company's program name. And the refund policy itself contains an unfilled template character and a stray reference to a “medical weight loss journey.”13
What that does and doesn't mean. It means you should treat the conflicting details as unresolved and confirm the specifics in writing. It does not establish whether the clinical care is good or bad. We cannot turn a promise of labs and clinician review into an independently verified safety or quality ranking.
Also note: enclomiphene and sermorelin appear on Taurus's menu. Neither is testosterone. Enclomiphene is not FDA-approved, and a compounded sermorelin product is not an FDA-approved testosterone treatment. Don't treat them as interchangeable with testosterone replacement.12726
If a low, published, venous-lab entry price is what you came for, read the offer beside the fee and refund terms before paying:

Are Defy Medical and Hone Health closer to what you want from Marek?
Defy Medical is worth comparing for pay-per-service care, while Hone Plus is worth comparing for a published membership and lab schedule. Neither pricing model proves greater clinical depth or better outcomes, and neither provider is a paid placement here.6910
Defy Medical
Defy dates its start to 2011. It offers telehealth and an in-person clinic; check your state and the service you need rather than assuming nationwide availability for every treatment.28
On its TRT cost page, Defy states that a male patient's average cost is under $175 per month for the first year, including testosterone, a weekly aromatase inhibitor, lab work, and consultations. After the first year, it estimates around $125 per month. The company adds that it doesn't lock patients into subscriptions or contracts, doesn't charge a monthly fee, and that charges are due when the service is purchased.6
Defy calls that an estimate, not a price guarantee, and your cost depends on your protocol. Fair enough. But the useful comparison is your own itemized quote—not a promise that your bill will stay below the published average. Ask about consultation fees, repeat labs, shipping, any physical exam, and each prescribed medicine. The useful upside of Defy's stated model is that there is no membership you have to remember to cancel.
An aromatase inhibitor is a separate medicine that affects estrogen production. Its inclusion in a provider's price example is not a recommendation that every man taking testosterone needs one. The same applies to hCG: it is not automatically included in the quoted example, and it does not guarantee preserved fertility.6429
Read the treatment terms, not just the no-membership claim. Defy's public patient-portal terms discuss required physical exams and ongoing lab and consultation checks. They also contain consent language about treatment that may fall outside medical-organization guidelines. That public document is dated April 2021; ask for the current terms that would govern your care and the clinician's basis for the proposed treatment.18
Best for: someone who wants pay-as-you-go rather than a subscription and is willing to compare each required service.
Not for: someone who wants a fixed all-in price established by the company average. A complicated history, prior anabolic steroid use, or fertility concern is a reason for appropriate clinical evaluation—not proof that this particular commercial clinic is the right specialist.
Hone Health
Hone Plus currently lists $135 per month, or $1,620 for 12 membership payments, with medication separate. Its $45 initial lab-and-consultation offer is separate too. Basic is $25/month but is not the TRT plan; Premium's $155/month and $65 initial testing describe a different tier.30
For someone leaving Marek, Hone's lab policy is worth reading before paying. It publishes both outside-lab acceptance rules and a confirmatory testing step for patients whose initial results suggest that TRT may be appropriate.1910
The testing fee is not fully consistent across its own pages. Hone's Plus overview lists an at-lab confirmation test at $45; its testing schedule lists $50. Both list an $80 home option. Ask which fee applies. Follow-up testing is listed at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, with the required markers varying by visit; the clinician may adjust the schedule.910
The membership is not the medication price. Hone lists shipping as included, but medication is separate. It lists injectable testosterone cypionate from $28 per vial, not per month, and compounded testosterone cream from $60/month. A vial price does not tell you how often your prescription will be filled. Do not compare either figure with an all-in bundle until you know the exact product and billing schedule.9
Best for: someone who wants a published membership and follow-up testing schedule, with a separate medication bill.
Not for: men who don't want to maintain a membership to keep access, or who want à la carte pricing. Hone's billing and FAQ pages also disagree about whether cancellation takes effect immediately or at the end of the current billing period; the cancellation table below preserves that conflict.2122

Can you reuse the lab work you already paid Marek for?
Sometimes, but accepting your results and waiving the charge are two different things. Hone Health states that outside results must be from the last 90 days and contain every required marker; you must still purchase its initial test to use that process.19
We took the marker list Marek publishes for its Pre-TRT Panel and checked it against the marker list Hone publishes as its requirement. This is a comparison of published lists, not an inspection of a patient's actual report.
Hone's published requirement for men's hormone replacement therapy is: total testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG, albumin, luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol, AST, and ALT. SHBG is sex hormone-binding globulin, a protein that carries testosterone around your blood. LH is the pituitary signal that tells your testicles to produce testosterone. AST and ALT are liver enzymes.19
Marek's published Pre-TRT Panel marker list includes total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, SHBG, LH, and a great deal more — prolactin, cortisol, FSH, DHEA-S, IGF-1, a full thyroid panel, ApoB, Lp(a), hsCRP, fasting insulin, HbA1c, iron studies, and a complete blood count.11
What it does not list is albumin, AST, or ALT.
That is not proof that those results are absent from every completed panel. A product-page summary can omit the components shown on a laboratory report. Hone must review the actual report before anyone can tell you whether another draw is needed.1119
The eight-marker transfer check
| Marker Hone requires | Named on Marek's published Pre-TRT Panel list? | What to check on your actual report |
|---|---|---|
| Total testosterone | Yes—LC/MS | Result, collection date and time, units, and reference range |
| Free testosterone | Yes—equilibrium dialysis | Result and method; Hone describes calculated free testosterone in its intake panel |
| SHBG | Yes | The actual result, not just confirmation that the panel was ordered |
| Albumin | Not named | Whether it appears as a result or as part of another panel |
| LH | Yes | The actual result |
| Estradiol | Yes—ultrasensitive LC/MS | Result and method |
| AST | Not named | Whether it appears on the completed chemistry report |
| ALT | Not named | Whether it appears on the completed chemistry report |
Source comparison checked September 14, 2026: Marek Diagnostics' Pre-TRT product list and Hone's outside-lab policy. Matching marker names does not establish that Hone accepts the report or waives a charge.1119
Hone's policy is explicit: if the actual outside labs are missing a required marker, it may require another draw. This is an illustration of a rule worth carrying into every conversation you have this month: a panel is not a panel. Ask for the specific marker list before you assume anything transfers.19
Panel contents change, so confirm with both companies before relying on this.
What to do about it
Before you close any account, download and save: your full lab result PDFs, your lab requisitions, your invoices, and a copy of the physical exam you obtained. Ask who holds the medical record, how to request a copy, and whether you can still access it after cancellation. A portal login and the right process for obtaining a medical record are not the same thing.
And one reframe, because we think it matters. If your Marek tests were taken before treatment, those reports preserve a dated view of your untreated hormones. An on-treatment result is not a substitute for that earlier measurement. Let the receiving clinician decide which records and further tests are useful.4
You're not throwing the records away. You're taking them with you.

Does cancelling mean you get a refund?
“Cancel anytime” describes a cancellation option, not a refund promise. It does not tell you what you still owe, what you get back, or when access ends; those details depend on the applicable terms, and some of the documents below disagree.
| Provider or service | What the published policy says | What to settle before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Marek Health care program | We could not fully reconfirm its current care-program cancellation terms | Obtain the terms for your actual booked services; do not substitute the Diagnostics store policy |
| Marek Diagnostics lab order | Web sales are final; orders cannot be canceled once placed.16 | Lab location and state eligibility before buying |
| Taurus Meds | Cancellation requests must arrive at least 72 hours before billing, or another cycle is charged. Its subscription policy limits cancellation refunds to medical disqualification; its sales page separately advertises a 90-day results-related guarantee, less lab and pharmacy fees.31 | Get written clarification on which governs your account, which charges can be refunded, and when access ends |
| Male Excel | Cancellation is allowed, but its terms generally make completed sales and fees non-refundable unless otherwise stated in writing. Its FAQ describes a refill reminder 48 hours before billing and shipment.318 | The cutoff to stop the next charge and shipment; whether cancellation affects a pending prescription or remaining access |
| Defy Medical | No recurring membership in its stated model. The public patient terms make performed services non-refundable and allow a missed or late-canceled consultation fee.618 | Your booked-service, lab-order, medication, and appointment terms; no membership does not mean all payments are refundable |
| Hone Health | The billing article describes immediate cancellation with non-refundable fees; the membership FAQ describes access through the current billing period.2122 | The effective date in your account and what happens to pending labs, appointments, and prescriptions |
Three questions to send in writing before you enter a card anywhere:
- What is my last billable date if I cancel today?
- Which specific charges are refundable, and which are final?
- After I cancel, do I keep access to my records and results?
How can you switch without creating a gap in your care?
Coordinate the change with both clinicians before you cancel anything. Completing a questionnaire, paying a company, or transferring a record is not the same as having a new prescription ready. Keep your current access until the new clinician has actually reviewed you and you understand the transition plan.
1. Gather everything before you cancel. Lab result PDFs, requisitions, invoices, your physical exam copy, and your current prescription details. Ask how record access will work after cancellation rather than assuming the portal will remain unchanged.
2. Confirm the new clinician can actually treat you. Ask about your state, whether they accept outside records, whether an exam is required, and how long from intake to a first appointment. Telehealth rules vary by state and change.32
3. Get the billing and refill plan in writing. Who handles your next refill, in what sequence, from which pharmacy, and on what date. Write the answers down. Treat estimates as estimates.
4. Cancel last, not first. Once the new clinician has reviewed you and the transition plan is real, close the old account if switching remains the right choice. Confirm any final charges and save the cancellation confirmation.
What we will not do here is give you a plan for managing your medication during a gap. That is a clinical decision, not a content decision. Do not start, stop, stretch, or change testosterone on your own to bridge a transition. If a gap is coming, that's a conversation with the prescribing clinician, and it should happen before the gap, not during it.
12 questions to take into your next call
Copy these into a note, use them with two providers, and compare the written answers. No signup is needed to use this checklist.
- State and clinician: Can your assigned clinician provide this care while I am physically in my state, and what is their full name and license type?
- Existing records: Which of my lab reports, exam records, and prescription records will you accept, and does accepting them remove any charge?
- Diagnosis: What evidence will you use to confirm the diagnosis, and what further early-morning testing is needed in my case?
- Exams: Is an in-person visit or physical required now or later, who must perform it, and who pays?
- Complete cost: What will I pay over the next 365 days for all required care, including membership, tests, medication, supplies, shipping, and outside visits?
- Commitment: Which charges recur, on what dates, and what is the shortest commitment? What changes after the opening offer?
- Treatment: What exact medicine and treatment format are proposed? Is the finished product FDA-approved or compounded, and is any use off-label?
- Other medicines and fertility: Why is each extra medicine needed, and should my fertility plans change the care route before treatment?
- Pharmacy: Which pharmacy would dispense my medicine, can I choose another, and what happens if that pharmacy cannot fill it?
- Monitoring and access: What follow-up visits and tests are required, which are included, and how do clinical questions reach the prescriber?
- Handover: Who is responsible for the next refill and monitoring during the switch, and which dates are confirmed rather than estimates?
- Exit: What is the cancellation cutoff, what is refundable, what happens to pending orders, and how do I obtain my records afterward?
A useful answer can be “not yet.” Missing a quote, an accepted record, or a clinician's plan is a reason to finish that step—not a reason to rush into a new subscription.
Is a cheaper clinic a worse clinic?
Not automatically: price alone does not establish the quality of the diagnosis or follow-up. The Endocrine Society calls for compatible symptoms or signs plus consistently low testosterone, confirmed with appropriate repeat early-morning fasting testing and accurate lab methods.417
One number on one morning is not a diagnosis. Neither is a questionnaire.
A total testosterone value such as 300 ng/dL is not a universal diagnosis or an automatic prescription threshold. The result needs to be read with symptoms, the test method and reference range, repeat results, and possible causes. The Endocrine Society's July 2026 statement continues to call for at least two morning fasting measurements.17
Hone explicitly publishes a confirmatory test. Its schedule says patients whose initial results suggest TRT may be appropriate must complete confirmation testing before proceeding. Where a provider's public offer mentions only a starting test, that does not establish everything the clinician will order—or prove that a second diagnostic test is included in the price.10
Ask this on your consult, whoever you choose: “How will you confirm the diagnosis, and what repeat early-morning testing is needed and included for me?”
A written answer about the process is more useful than a promise that a clinician will approve you. Someone already receiving treatment also needs their current and receiving clinicians to decide how existing results should be used; this page is not a testing or medication-interruption protocol.
The other thing worth understanding is that “a testosterone test” is not one thing:
- Collection means how the sample reaches the lab: for example, a venous blood draw or a finger-prick collection.
- Measurement method means how the lab analyzes it. LC/MS and equilibrium dialysis are methods, not competing collection locations.
- Panel contents means which markers are ordered. A wider panel does not by itself prove better accuracy, a better diagnosis, or a need for more treatment.17
Marek names its total- and free-testosterone methods. Male Excel names a five-marker starting panel. Those are useful facts, but they do not support ranking every provider's test accuracy without the actual assay details and validation.1120
What should monitoring include?
Ask the clinician for a monitoring plan tied to the prescribed product and your health history. Testosterone levels, response and adverse effects, hematocrit—the share of blood made up of red cells—and appropriate prostate assessment are among the issues covered by specialty guidance. Blood pressure also needs attention; FDA's 2025 action required new or updated blood-pressure warnings.433
Hone publishes its follow-up lab schedule. Male Excel's FAQ says further testing may be needed and describes periodic assessments. Defy's public patient terms describe ongoing laboratory and consultation requirements. None of that is proof that every test a particular patient needs is included at no extra cost.10818
A history of prostate or breast cancer, elevated hematocrit, untreated severe sleep apnea, a recent major cardiovascular event, possible pituitary or testicular disease, or infertility needs an appropriate clinician's assessment rather than a price-led selection. Start with primary care, urology, endocrinology, or reproductive urology as the concern requires.4
For the detailed questions to bring to that visit, see TRT blood tests.
Can insurance pay for any of this?
A provider's membership, a lab test, and a pharmacy prescription can have different payment rules. For insurance-led care, start with your plan's network and covered medicines; do not assume either that a cash-pay program is covered or that every prescription from a telehealth clinician must be cash-pay.
Male Excel's terms specify cash-pay care and say its services and products will not be submitted to commercial or government insurers. Hone also does not process insurance, but it permits an outside pharmacy, where the medication may be covered under your plan. Hone says it does not handle prior authorization, so coverage is not guaranteed.3112
Here is the path, and we earn nothing from it:
- See your primary care clinician or a urologist. First check network status, referral rules, and your expected share of visit and lab costs.
- Discuss proper evaluation. Ask how symptoms and repeat early-morning results will be assessed, and which other tests your history calls for. A long universal panel is not a substitute for that decision.4
- If you're diagnosed and treated, compare the exact prescription. Ask the pharmacy and insurer about the finished product, quantity, covered alternatives, copay or deductible, and any prior authorization. A coupon price for one vial is not a complete treatment bill.
Now the honest part, because pretending this always works would make us exactly what we're criticizing. Being in-network does not guarantee a covered test, a low copay, or a testosterone prescription. A clinician may decide that another cause of your symptoms needs attention. That is a reason to discuss the evaluation or seek an appropriate second opinion—not to buy access to a more agreeable cutoff.4
HSA and FSA payment is also separate from insurance coverage. Some providers advertise it, but ask your plan administrator about your expense and required documentation rather than treating an accepted payment card as a coverage decision.811

Can you keep the labs and change the prescriber?
Yes—you can buy a Marek Diagnostics panel without joining Guided Optimization. Its Pre-TRT Panel is $595, but ask the intended clinician whether that exact panel is useful and acceptable before buying it; the purchase does not include ongoing prescribing care.11
How it works: a healthcare provider reviews and approves the test request, so no provider visit is needed to order. The Pre-TRT Panel includes the blood draw fee. The site lists a $10 draw fee for custom individual-test orders and advertises free blood draws on orders over $199. HSA and FSA payments are offered through TrueMed. Draws for this panel happen at Quest.11
The page also includes a 45-minute lab-review session. Ask who performs that review and what it covers; do not treat it as a promise that a prescribing clinician will diagnose you or continue your existing prescription.11
Two conditions matter. First, resolve your state before paying: the product page names New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island restrictions, while the refund policy also names Massachusetts. Second, get the receiving clinician's acceptance first. Buying a panel independently does not force another clinic to waive its own testing or intake charges.111619
This can be useful for someone who wants to separate testing from ongoing care. It is not a reason for everyone who is undecided about treatment to buy an extensive panel. Let the clinical question determine the testing, not the number of markers on sale.17
Could your medicine or dispensing pharmacy change when you switch?
Yes: a new clinician may propose a different medicine, treatment format, or dispensing pharmacy. Compare the exact finished product, not just the word “testosterone”; FDA-approved testosterone products, compounded testosterone, and non-testosterone medicines are separate categories.2634
| Provider or care route | Product and pharmacy information we found | What remains patient-specific |
|---|---|---|
| Male Excel | Its FAQ identifies testosterone cream as compounded and lists Anazao Health Corp. and WellDyneRx-Fl as pharmacies. Its terms do not allow prescriptions to be sent to a pharmacy outside its arrangement.831 | Which pharmacy fills your order; the exact injectable product and whether that finished product is FDA-approved or compounded |
| Taurus Meds | Its offer discusses compounded hormones and also lists non-testosterone medicines.1 | Exact prescription, finished-product approval status, dispensing pharmacy, and which substitutions require your clinician's approval |
| Defy Medical | Its public pharmacy-contact page lists APS, Empower, and Hallandale as compounding-pharmacy contacts.35 | Whether your actual prescription would be compounded or an FDA-approved product, which pharmacy fills it, and the final cost |
| Hone Plus | Its pricing distinguishes injectable testosterone from compounded cream and troches; its outside-pharmacy policy permits a retail pharmacy with conditions.912 | Manufacturer and finished-product status for the proposed injectable prescription; product availability and cost at the chosen pharmacy |
| Marek Diagnostics + separate clinician | The panel is testing, not a medication or pharmacy purchase.11 | Everything about prescribing and dispensing belongs in the separate clinician's plan |
| Local clinician + pharmacy | Ask about the FDA-approved product that fits the clinical plan and insurance formulary | A prescription and insurance coverage are not guaranteed simply because you choose local care |
A named pharmacy in a company's documents is not an independent license check or proof that it will fill your prescription. Get the pharmacy's legal name and location, then check its authority through your state pharmacy board. The same principle applies to the assigned clinician: check the relevant state medical, osteopathic, or nursing board rather than treating a company-wide “licensed providers” claim as a personal credential check. The state medical-board directory is a starting point for physician-board contacts.
A household detail that matters: Male Excel's terms say its pharmacies will not ship medication in child-resistant packaging. Ask about secure storage and product-specific precautions before a shipment arrives.31
For a topical testosterone choice, also ask about transfer to other people through skin contact. Approved testosterone-gel safety information warns about secondary exposure, especially in children, and Male Excel's own cream information carries a transfer warning. Follow the instructions for the exact product; a compounded cream is not interchangeable with an approved gel.36826
FDA's February 2025 labeling action addressed cardiovascular-warning language and blood-pressure warnings. In June 2026, FDA requested further changes to age-related limitation-of-use and prostate-safety language. A request for label changes is not proof that every individual label has already changed, nor approval of a compounded preparation or a promise of anti-aging benefits.3334
For the broader differences between injections, topicals, and other options, see TRT treatment formats.
What should you settle first if you want children?
Testosterone taken from outside the body can suppress sperm production. That means fertility plans belong ahead of the provider decision, not after it. If you're trying to conceive now, or expect to within a few years, the right first step is usually a urologist, a reproductive urologist, or another fertility-aware clinician rather than a general online TRT program.4
Medicines like clomiphene, enclomiphene, and hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) come up constantly in this conversation. They are not testosterone replacement and are not interchangeable with it. They work differently, they carry their own considerations, and their approval status is not the same.
| Medicine | What to understand before comparing offers |
|---|---|
| Testosterone | Replacement hormone. It can suppress sperm production; do not assume adding another medicine removes that concern.4 |
| Clomiphene citrate | FDA-approved products have an indication for certain ovulation problems in women. Male testosterone-deficiency use is off-label. A compounded combination does not inherit the approval of the original product.2526 |
| Enclomiphene | Not FDA-approved. It is not an approved generic version of clomiphene and is not testosterone.27 |
| hCG | FDA-approved hCG products have specific indications, including selected cases of male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism—a problem with hormone signaling to the testes. That is not approval of a universal “fertility protection with TRT” regimen.29 |
What we will not do is promise you anything here. Not that you'll become infertile. Not that anything preserves fertility. Not that anything restores it on a timeline. Those are not outcomes a provider-comparison page can guarantee.
Bring up fertility before the first prescription, and discuss it with the current clinician before a switch if you are already receiving treatment. Read our TRT and fertility guide for the questions to ask.

What happens to online TRT after December 31, 2026?
As of September 14, 2026, the temporary federal telemedicine prescribing flexibility runs through December 31, 2026. It can allow qualifying DEA-registered clinicians to prescribe controlled medicines without a prior in-person evaluation, but it does not remove the need for a legitimate medical purpose, appropriate evaluation, required telemedicine interaction, or compliance with state law.32
Testosterone is a Schedule III controlled substance. The DEA and HHS published a Fourth Temporary Extension on December 31, 2025 (90 Fed. Reg. 61301), effective January 1 through December 31, 2026. It is not a guarantee that the same arrangement will continue in 2027.532
This is worth understanding, not panicking about. Ask before committing to care that would run beyond the current rule's end date.
A routine physical in your records is not automatic protection against a prescribing-rule change. Federal definitions tie an in-person evaluation to the practitioner and the applicable prescribing framework. An exam done elsewhere does not by itself establish that a telehealth prescriber has satisfied every requirement or that a program is less dependent on temporary flexibility.37
So ask: “If the federal telemedicine flexibility isn't extended past December, what happens to my prescription?” Also ask who would arrange any required evaluation and who would pay. A useful answer explains the actual care plan rather than promising the law will not change.
State rules move independently of the federal rule, and some states impose their own requirements. Confirm your state at intake wherever you go, including where you will physically be during the appointment.3231
Which state restrictions could affect this comparison?
| Service | Provider-stated restriction checked September 14, 2026 | What that means for your decision |
|---|---|---|
| Male Excel | Its FAQ excludes Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island.8 | Do not pay on the assumption that every state is served. Reconfirm the exact service and clinician for your location. |
| Marek Diagnostics Quest ordering | Product page: New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island. Refund policy also names Massachusetts.1116 | Resolve the conflicting disclosures before buying. This is not a finding that those states ban all Quest testing or all Marek care. |
| Taurus, Defy, Hone, and Marek Health prescribing care | We did not establish a complete current state-by-treatment map from the sources reviewed | Get confirmation for your state, the proposed medicine, and the assigned clinician before payment. An active website is not proof of available appointments or legal prescribing authority everywhere. |
Who should stay with Marek Health?
Staying is a reasonable choice when the care you receive fits your needs and no alternative has shown a better fit on the details that matter to you. A lower advertised price alone does not establish that you would retain the testing, clinical access, coaching, and continuity you value.
We mean that. Marek Diagnostics publishes the methods for its Pre-TRT Panel and includes a lab-review session. Those are concrete features you can compare. The right panel is the one that answers your clinical questions; more tests are not automatically better.1117
If your only complaint is the total, look at the labs-only route above before you leave entirely. First ask the intended clinician whether separating testing from prescribing would actually save money and meet your needs.
A customer story or a high star rating cannot establish that a panel will find a missed diagnosis, that treatment is safe for you, or that a quoted price is current. The decision here rests on the documented services and your clinical needs, not a medical-outcome testimonial.
How did we verify this comparison?
This comparison uses accessible official provider documents for commercial claims and primary medical and regulatory sources for health and legal claims. We distinguish what a company publishes from what we independently calculated, and we keep unresolved fees and terms visible instead of filling them with guesses.
Our method is documented at How We Review TRT Providers. It separates verified facts, provider-stated facts, customer-experience signals, and editorial conclusions; it calculates complete cost rather than repeating a teaser price; and it looks at clinical eligibility, testing process, clinician access, state availability, treatment formats, medication and pharmacy transparency, fertility handling, monitoring, total cost, cancellation, support, and claims transparency. We do not assign numeric medical scores, and inclusion on this page is not an endorsement.
What this page adds: the cost ledger combines each offer's own fees, while the lab-transfer table checks eight required markers one by one. The cancellation comparison places sales promises beside policy language. The pharmacy and state tables separate named disclosures from questions that still need an individual answer. The 12-question checklist lets you use that evidence with an actual quote.
Verification limits: Marek Health's main care-program pages could not be fully retrieved, so its full current fee and policy schedule is not labeled verified here. Defy's cost is a provider estimate, and the publicly accessible patient-portal terms carry an older document date. We did not complete checkout, contact support, validate an assigned clinician's or pharmacy's license, or test care as patients.
Medical sources include the Endocrine Society's guideline and July 2026 statement; FDA's compounding, thyroid, and testosterone information; official clomiphene and hCG labeling; and current federal regulations. Links beside the relevant claims identify the exact pages used.
What we did not verify is listed in the box near the top of this page. We'd rather tell you what we don't know than fill the gap with a guess.
See our editorial standards, corrections policy, and privacy policy.
What else should you know before choosing a Marek alternative?
These answers distinguish a published offer from the care and bill you would actually receive. Where the answer depends on your records, state, plan, or prescription, the next step is a written answer or clinical evaluation—not a universal winner.
What is the cheapest alternative to Marek Health?
We did not establish a cheapest complete care program. Hone lists a $45 initial Plus test-and-consultation offer and Taurus advertises $49, but their later charges differ. Defy's under-$175/month first-year average is a company estimate; local insurance-based care depends on your plan. Compare complete written quotes, not entry prices.916
How much does Marek Health actually cost?
The standalone Marek Diagnostics Pre-TRT Panel is $595. That is not a complete Guided Optimization care price. We could not fully reconfirm the current intake, required labs, visits, medication, exam, and refund terms for the care program, so ask Marek for a written itemized quote.11
Does Marek Health take insurance?
Marek Diagnostics describes its lab orders as cash-pay and offers HSA/FSA payment through TrueMed. We did not reconfirm insurance documentation or billing terms for the whole Marek Health care program. Ask about the exact service rather than assuming that a lab-store payment policy covers the whole arrangement.11
Does Marek Health require an in-person visit?
We could not reconfirm its current program-specific exam rules. Ask what exam record is required before starting and continuing care, who must perform it, and how often it repeats. A routine physical does not automatically resolve every federal or state prescribing requirement.3732
Can I use my own lab results with Marek Health?
We could not reconfirm its current outside-lab acceptance policy. Send the actual reports to the program for a decision before buying another panel, and ask whether any required test purchase is waived. Do not assume that another company's acceptance policy applies to Marek.
Why can't I order Marek labs in New York, New Jersey, or Rhode Island?
Marek Diagnostics says Quest orders through its platform are restricted for residents of those states. Its refund policy also names Massachusetts, so resolve that discrepancy before paying. These disclosures do not mean all lab testing in those states is prohibited.1116
Will another clinic accept my Marek lab results?
Sometimes, with conditions. Hone requires results from the last 90 days, all required markers, and purchase of its initial test. Marek's product-page list names five of Hone's eight required markers; albumin, AST, and ALT are not named there. Check the actual report before concluding that any result is missing.1911
Is a finger-prick testosterone test accurate enough?
The collection method alone does not answer that. Ask about the actual lab method, validation, timing, and confirmation process. Proper evaluation needs compatible symptoms or signs and consistently low results—not a conclusion based only on the kit type.417
Is compounded testosterone the same as FDA-approved testosterone?
No. A compounded preparation is not an FDA-approved finished product. Ask which you're being prescribed and which pharmacy dispenses it. The approval of an ingredient or a different manufactured medicine does not establish approval or equivalence of the compound.26
Can I get TRT without a blood test?
Guideline-based diagnosis requires symptoms or signs plus consistently low testosterone confirmed with appropriate repeat early-morning testing. A questionnaire is not a diagnosis. A receiving clinician decides how to use existing results when someone is already in treatment.417
Will TRT affect my fertility?
Testosterone taken from outside the body can suppress sperm production. If children are in your plans, talk to a urologist or reproductive urologist before starting anything. Do not assume hCG, clomiphene, or enclomiphene guarantees preserved or restored fertility.429
What happens if telehealth prescribing rules change?
The current temporary federal flexibility runs through December 31, 2026, with conditions. Ask any provider what its continuity plan is if the rules change, including who would arrange and pay for a required in-person evaluation. Do not assume the next extension is guaranteed.3237
Can I compare all this and decide not to switch?
Yes, and for some readers that's the right call. Compare what you would gain and lose, including required testing, access, total cost, and continuity. Staying, using a different care route, or finishing the clinical evaluation before choosing a provider are all valid outcomes.
Still deciding?
You came here to answer one question: what am I actually paying Marek for, and which parts do I still need? Use the cost ledger and checklist to compare those parts before paying a new provider.
If you know the answer now, act on it. If you don't, don't guess. Get the missing quote, lab-policy answer, or clinical advice first.
